Price Level of Household Consumption

64 years, 1960–2023 · 185 countries

The price level of household consumption says how expensive a country is: what the things households buy cost there, converted at market exchange rates, compared with prices in the United States. A value of 0.5 means a basket of consumer goods and services costs about half what the same basket cost in the US in 2021; above 1, more.

This site holds every year from 1960 to 2023, read from GGDC’s own data and stored exactly as published.

Precision

The headline is stored to 15 decimals, as published.

Rounded by this site

Never. Tables on screen may show fewer decimals; the files never do.

Changed by this site

Reshaped into one row per country: regional and income-group totals are left out, only the columns listed are kept, each row gets its ISO 3166 code, and some country names are brought to one spelling. No value is recalculated, rescaled or rounded.

From Penn World Table 11.0 (column pl_c), published by the Groningen Growth and Development Centre. The file also carries the table's own flags: whether each year's prices come from an international price survey or are extrapolated from one, and whether the country's price level is treated as an outlier.
