The spread
75 countries, one dot each, on one scale — further right is a higher value. Half the countries are above 52.4723; a quarter are above 226.6026, and a quarter below 0.4200. The bar in each row marks that continent’s middle country.
Log scale: each gridline is ten times the one before, so countries of very different sizes can be seen on one line.

Every country
In order, lowest value first. No rank or position is shown: too many countries share the same value for an order to mean anything. Only countries where falciparum malaria has been transmitted since 2000 appear. A country missing from the table is not a country with a zero: MAP's data cannot tell 'no transmission' from 'no estimate', so neither is shown as a reading. The other main parasite, P. vivax, is not counted here, so the figure understates malaria where vivax is common, as in much of Asia and Latin America.

Over time
Each point is one year from 2000, all re-estimated together in MAP's newest release to carry this measure, and the shaded band is the uncertainty MAP publishes around each estimate. A falling line means fewer cases per person, not necessarily fewer cases in total, because populations grow.

08The measure
About malaria incidence (falciparum)
Malaria incidence is the number of new clinical cases of falciparum malaria — the deadliest of the malaria parasites — per 1,000 people each year. The figures are modelled by the Malaria Atlas Project from parasite surveys and health-system case reports, which is why every endemic country has an estimate for every year, even where few cases are ever recorded.
What the number is: New P. falciparum malaria cases per 1,000 people per year.

11Questions
Malaria incidence (falciparum): questions and answers
Which country has the lowest malaria incidence (falciparum)?
Oman, at 0.0001, among the 75 countries compared in 2025.
Which country has the highest malaria incidence (falciparum)?
Benin, at 334.7472, among the 75 countries compared in 2025.
How many countries does the Malaria Incidence (P. falciparum) cover?
75 in 2025, and 101 at least once across all editions. The number measured varies from 75 to 97 between editions.
What is the world average malaria incidence (falciparum)?
This site does not calculate a world average, which would depend on how countries are weighted. In the middle country of the 75 compared in 2025, the figure was 52.4723.
Is this Malaria Atlas Project (MAP)’s own ranking?
No ranking is shown. Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) publishes values only, and too many countries share the same value for an ordering to mean anything, so none is derived.
How often is the Malaria Incidence (P. falciparum) published?
This site holds 26 reference years, 2000–2025, all recalculated in Malaria Atlas Project (MAP)’s 2026 report on one method — not 26 separate publications.
Where does the data come from, and can I download it?
From Malaria Atlas Project (MAP), under CC BY 3.0. From the Malaria Atlas Project's own Trends API (national estimates, with their uncertainty bounds). MAP serves the rate per person; the decimal point has been moved to its documented unit, cases per 1,000 people, without changing a digit. Every edition is on this site’s Datasets pages as a full table, and downloads as a CSV file with every value unrounded.

How this page reads the numbers
- No rank or position is shown: Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) publishes values only, and too many countries share the same value for an ordering to mean anything.
- Which end is better follows the publisher’s own reading of the measure.
- A country is named at an end only when it holds that value alone. Where several share it, the page says how many and names none first.
- Values are stored exactly as published and trimmed only for display. “The middle country” is the median of the countries measured, not a world average.
The file itself, column by column — where it came from, what each column holds, and every edition as a CSV — is on its dataset page.
