01The country
About Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia occupies most of the Arabian Peninsula in western Asia, with the Red Sea to the west and the Gulf to the east. Much of the land is desert, including the Rub’ al Khali, or Empty Quarter, one of the largest sand deserts in the world, and the Nafud in the north. Mountains run along the western coast, and there are no permanent rivers. The climate is hot and dry, with very high summer temperatures. Riyadh is the capital, and Jeddah, Mecca, Medina and Dammam are major cities. Arabic is the official language.
The peninsula is the birthplace of Islam, and Mecca and Medina are the two holiest cities of the faith, visited by pilgrims from around the world during the Hajj and at other times. The modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was proclaimed in 1932, uniting several regions under the Al Saud dynasty, and oil was discovered a few years later. The country is known for ancient sites such as Hegra, for Bedouin traditions, and for its Arabian heritage. Its economy is built on oil and petrochemicals, alongside growing construction, tourism and services sectors.

Where Saudi Arabia stands out
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Saudi Arabia sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

How to read this page
- The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
- Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.
How a standing is built from percentiles, why Saudi Arabia can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.
