Demand for Family Planning Satisfied by Modern Methods

34 years, 1990–2023 · 196 countries · 3 measures

Of the women who want to stop or delay having children, this is the share using a modern method of contraception — the pill, an implant, an injection, an IUD, condoms or sterilisation. It is the UN's headline measure of whether family planning reaches the women who want it, and it does not depend on how many children a society chooses to have.

This site holds every year from 1990 to 2023, read from UN DESA Population Division’s own data and stored exactly as published.

Rounded by this site

Never. Tables on screen may show fewer decimals; the files never do.

Changed by this site

Reshaped into one row per country: regional and income-group totals are left out, only the columns listed are kept, each row gets its ISO 3166 code, and some country names are brought to one spelling. No value is recalculated, rescaled or rounded.

From the UN Population Division's Estimates and Projections of Family Planning Indicators 2024, a model fitted to the household surveys in its World Contraceptive Use database, read from the Division's own download. Each value keeps the Division's note on whether it falls between two surveys or beyond them. Years after 2023 are forecasts and are excluded.
