About life expectancy at 65
Life expectancy at 65 is how many more years a person who has reached 65 would live if that year's death rates held for the rest of their life. Because it starts the count after childhood, it measures old-age health directly, free of the child deaths that pull life expectancy at birth down in poorer countries.
What the number is: Further years a 65-year-old would live at current death rates.
What it does not measure
It counts years, not health: it says nothing about how many of those years are lived without illness or disability.
