01The country
Norway occupies the western and northern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, with a long, deeply indented coastline on the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea. Its coast is known for fjords, long narrow inlets carved by glaciers, and for thousands of islands. Most of the interior is mountainous, and the north lies beyond the Arctic Circle, where the midnight sun and the northern lights can be seen. The Gulf Stream keeps the coast milder than its latitude would suggest. Oslo is the capital, and Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger are major cities. Norwegian is the main language, and Sami is also official in some areas.
The Viking Age and medieval kingdoms shaped early Norway, which later spent centuries in union with Denmark and then with Sweden. It became fully independent in 1905 and is a constitutional monarchy. The country is known for its landscapes, stave churches, polar explorers and winter sports, and the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo. Oil and natural gas were discovered offshore in the late 1960s and became central to its economy, alongside fishing and aquaculture, shipping, hydropower and services.

03Highs and lows
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Norway sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.
In the top third of all countries measured. 58 are within ten places of the best in the world, in a field of at least 50 countries — marked with that place.
