01The country
Switzerland is a landlocked country in central Europe, bordered by Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. The Alps cover much of the south, the Jura mountains lie in the north-west, and most people live on the Swiss Plateau between them. The country has many lakes, including Lake Geneva, and the Rhine and the Rhône both rise in its mountains. The climate varies with altitude, from mild valleys to alpine peaks. Bern is the federal city, and Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne are major cities. German, French, Italian and Romansh are the national languages.
The Swiss Confederation traces its origins to an alliance of alpine communities in the late thirteenth century, and the modern federal state was established in 1848. The country is organised as a federation of cantons, is known for its long-standing neutrality, and hosts many international organisations, particularly in Geneva. Switzerland is known for its mountain scenery, railways, chocolate, cheese and watchmaking. Its economy is built on banking and finance, pharmaceuticals, precision engineering, insurance and tourism.
As Wikidata records them. Official languages are the least consistent — some countries list only a national language, others every regional one. Sources and licences.

03Highs and lows
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Switzerland sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.
In the top third of all countries measured. 48 are within ten places of the best in the world, in a field of at least 50 countries — marked with that place.
