01The country
Sweden lies on the Scandinavian Peninsula in northern Europe, bordered by Norway and Finland, with a long coastline on the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. The north is mountainous and heavily forested, with part of the country lying north of the Arctic Circle, while the south is flatter and more agricultural. Forests cover much of the land, and there are tens of thousands of lakes, including Vänern and Vättern. The climate is temperate in the south and subarctic in the north. Stockholm, built across islands, is the capital, and Gothenburg and Malmö are major cities. Swedish is the main language, and Sami and Finnish are among the recognised minority languages.
The Viking Age left its mark on the region, and Sweden developed into a unified kingdom during the Middle Ages, becoming a major power in northern Europe in the seventeenth century. It is a constitutional monarchy. The country is known for its design, music and literature, for the Nobel Prizes, most of which are presented in Stockholm, and for the right of public access to nature. Its economy includes engineering, vehicles, telecommunications, forestry, mining and services.
As Wikidata records them. Official languages are the least consistent — some countries list only a national language, others every regional one. Sources and licences.

Each standing is built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things. Select a subject for Sweden’s readings on it, or see every statistic held for Sweden in the table further down this page.
03Highs and lows
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Sweden sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.
In the top third of all countries measured. 50 are within ten places of the best in the world, in a field of at least 50 countries — marked with that place.
